The majority of the Australian Snow resorts are situated on the lower East Coast of Australia south of Sydney, NSW, close to Canberra in the ACT, and north east Melbourne, Victoria. There are also some snow fields in Tasmania. We'll try and cover most of them here in categories by State location.
There are more Australian Snow Fields that one might initially think. Some have fabulous infrastructure to cope with many visitors and some have very little and you might have to bring a lot in your self. We haven't been to all the Australian Snow fields and resorts yet but as we make our way we'll post notes and updates on the journey.
There are always advantages to hiring gear or buying snow gear on the mountains or at the resorts. One simple one is that if you hire snow gear at the resort, you don't have to carry the gear with you. We'll also try and identify any terrific Retail Snow Stores at the Snow Resorts and any Discounts or Snow Sales whether it's hiring and renting gear or buying.

The Victorian Snow Fields and Snow Resorts
Victoria is blessed with some magic snow fields that cater for all the interests.
The history of Victoria's snow fields is quite interesting with many closer to Melbourne being early favourites. But as transport became easier those resorts higher and more remote became more accessible. An early example is near Warburton with Mt Donna Buang that used to have ski fields and lodges back in the 1950's but in the modern day now only caters for snow play day trippers.
We'll work our way out of Melbourne to the fabulous Victotian Snow Fields and Resorts and give some basic details including ideas for things to do and distances. Make sure you geet more details on the snow fields and resorts from the pages on each of the mountains.

Mt Buller is one of Australia's most popular snow and ski resorts. Located only about 3hrs from Melbourne with great access and fabulous snow and facilities. Mt Buller has the lot, catering for day tripping sightseers to those that want to stay all season and ski runs from beginners thru to advanced. Buller also has a number of parks to cater for those skiers and boarders that like jumps and rails. From easy to the more challenging.

Mt Stirling Snow Field

Mt Stirling is situated right next to Mt Buller and is accessed on the same National Park entry point. Mt Stirling is great for cross country skiing and also for back country slopes. It's also great for sightseeing too and toboggan snow play.

Mt Donna Buang Snow Field

The Donna Buang snow play fields is only about one and half hours and 90 km from Melbourne on good roads. You will need to take most things with you here and there are limited services here for visitors. The town of Warburton is not far away and is terrific for services. Great for day trippers and snow play.
Lake Mountain Snow Resort

Lake Mountain is near the gorgeous town of Marysville and about 2 hours 15 minutes drive being 120 km from Melbourne. This snow field is a resort with day facilities for families. There is no accommodation on the mountain. But some local accommodation is handy in local towns nearby. Snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing are all good here.
New South Wales Snow Fields and Snow Resorts
The majority of the NSW Snow Fields are in the Snowy Mountains Alpine area of the south east NSW.
Great NSW snow fields like Perisher and Thredbo are front and centre on the lips of all Australians that head ot the snow in Winter. But there is also so much more to the NSW ski fields. And lots of snow fun to discover for those that are interested in seeking the journey of discovery.
